THE GERMANIC TRANSFORMATION OF THE GOSPEL
To subvert the Saxons into accepting Charlemagne's
Christianity, a monk translated the Gospel into an epic
poem, the Heliand. The meek, turn-the-other-check, Jesus
becomes a Germanic chieftain in a forest setting, gathering
twelve warriors about him. "Simon Peter, the mighty,
noble swordsman" had a longboat and killed the first
Roman who attempted to arrest Jesus.
